The purpose of this research is to verify that the hip flexor has potential of maintaining in an upright sitting posture with physiological spinal curve. The cross-sectional area (CSA) of the iliacus, one of the two major hip flexors, was measured using ultrasound tomography, and was compared between in an upright sitting posture and in a sitting posture with the trunk to lean forward by flexing the hip joints, as a control. The study sample included 10 healthy men (mean age 23.8±6.5 years). Ultrasound tomography was capable of identifying the iliacus, and the CSA of the iliacus was significantly greater by 33.1±11.3% in an upright sitting posture, compared with that in a control sitting posture.
